With the Lockdown in Effect, People Are Still Getting Married in Toronto

Sure, you can’t have the Kennedy-esque galas of the past, inviting everyone (and their dog) to the celebration. Couples are prioritizing the ceremony, choosing to partake rather than postpone. Of course you can wait for a party, but how about waiting for your life to start?

Toronto City Hall traditionally offered full wedding ceremonies, officiated by a Justice of the Peace or a City Clerk. This is great for many non religious people, or people looking to get married on a budget (and within a short time frame). The pricing is reasonable, offering a “pleasantly decorated” wedding chapel free of any culture-specific references that may offend some sensibilities. With the wedding chapel currently shut down–due to the Pandemic–they continue to offer marriage licenses.

Marriage Licenses are sold at the Downtown branch, the “retro-modern” twined-towers that constitute two halves of a complete circle. Parking is usually atrocious but should be reasonable considering the drop in human traffic. If you want to get married within the occupancy guidelines, contact a wedding officiant to perform the service and satisfy the legal requirements. Marriage is deeply spiritual, with the celebration rooted in the vows and not vice-versa. It allows a couple to communicate their intentions, to bring their two lives together, in unity and purpose. This is not something that can wait.

If you are looking for a Jewish Wedding, Rabbi David Cooper is honoured to recite the Hebrew Prayers, binding you together under the auspices of the Law’s of Moses. You can get married in a simple ceremony, joined by some family (or friends) who can also serve as official witnesses. If you are looking to have more guests, there is always the option of an outdoor wedding. Just to let you know (as of writing) that we are currently under a cold alert, making such options (next to) impossible at the current moment. If you want somewhere intimate to tie the knot, consider our intimate Toronto Wedding Chapel in North York.

Whatever your background, you can get legally married in Toronto for a price that is lower than City Hall (even if they were open). Elopement packages start at $600 (all inclusive) and include:

  • Registered Wedding Officiant Service.
  • Custom wedding vows.
  • Customized, unique service.
